Facilities
There is a cabin by the roots of the volcano, which we call Base Camp. This is where guests are geared up and served some delicious Icelandic meat soup or vegetable soup. Yes, it’s all you can eat, so dig in! There is also plenty of complimentary coffee, tea, and water at Base Camp.
The facilities at Base Camp are made from three work sheds, normally used for construction workers. The sheds were brought in by helicopter, just like everything else on location that’s too heavy for human transport. This includes the elevator and the meat for the soup.
We’ve renovated the place to make it feel both warm and cozy. The Base Camp staff make you feel right at home when you arrive there after the hike. On the way back from the crater you make another stop at Base Camp, this time you’re greeted with a bowl of hot soup. This is particularly nice when the weather is not in our favor.
Base Camp provides most of the necessities required for a day in the wilderness, including toilet facilities and a wireless internet connection. Base Camp is also the only place on earth where you can buy Inside the Volcano products and souvenirs.
